Avatar: The Last Airbender In Concert comes to York Barbican on Thursday 8 October, as part of a tour marking 20 years of the animated series. It's a live orchestral performance of Jeremy Zuckerman's Emmy Award-winning score, played in time with a two-hour visual journey through fan-favourite moments from the show, all projected onto a full-size cinema screen.
If you've seen the series, you know the music does a lot of the heavy lifting. Zuckerman's score is built around the different nations and their bending styles, and hearing it played live by a full orchestra brings that elemental world to life in a way a TV speaker can't quite manage. The visuals on the big screen follow along, so you're watching the scenes as the music plays, rather than just listening to a medley.
This isn't just a straight run-through of the old tracks, either. This edition adds new surprises and creative touches made specifically for the live performance, though the original dialogue and sound effects stay intact, so the scenes still sound as you remember them. The orchestra takes over the music, while the voices and sound effects run from the screen.
