Open studio session led by The Studio at Bowood artists to make a handmade holiday card and practice calligraphy, for all skill levels.
The Studio at Bowood is taking over the Saint Louis Art Museum for an open studio session on Friday, November 20, from 11 AM to 3 PM. The focus is holiday card making and calligraphy, so you'll spend the session putting together a handmade card and working on your lettering. It's a drop-in format, and all skill levels are welcome—no previous experience required.
Artists Dawn Buscher, Jenna Jordan, and Emma Vonder Haar are leading the session. They'll be on hand to guide you through the process, whether you're just starting out with a pen or you've got a few tricks up your sleeve. The whole thing is part of SLAM's Open Studio, which is designed to get visitors of all ages working with a wide range of materials and supplies, trying out new ways of making things and developing their own creative technique. The Studio at Bowood facilitates the session, so the artists are there to help you find your footing rather than just lecturing from the front.
If you've never tried calligraphy, this is a low-stakes way to get into it. You'll be working on something practical—a card you can actually mail—rather than just practicing drills on a scrap of paper. And because it's an open studio, you can move at your own pace. If you want to spend the whole four hours obsessing over a single letter, you can; if you'd rather knock out a few different cards, that works too.

It runs from 11 AM to 3 PM on Friday, November 20, at the museum's Studio at Bowood, 1 Fine Arts Dr in Forest Park. Since it's an open session, you don't have to be there for the full stretch—you can drop in and work for as long as you like.
