Chamber music concert featuring a wind quintet curated and performed by musicians from the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra brings a wind quintet to The Sheldon on Thursday, April 22, 2027, at 7:30 PM. This one is part of their Live at The Sheldon series, which is a bit different from their usual nights at Pulitzer Hall. Instead of the full orchestra, the SLSO puts together smaller chamber groups—brass trios, string quartets, and now this wind quintet—and lets the musicians themselves curate the programs. It's a way to see the people you usually spot in the back of the symphony take the lead.
Two of the orchestra's own musicians are running this one: Andrea Kaplan on flute and Philip Ross on oboe. They're curating and performing the program, though the specific repertoire hasn't been announced yet. That's part of the series' format—the lineup of instruments and players rotates throughout the season, so the music changes from one night to the next. The Live at The Sheldon series is presented with leadership support from the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation and welcomed by Classic 107.3.
There's also a local connection to the music that goes beyond the SLSO. The evening falls under the Sheldon Commissions, which started when Sheldon Program Advisor Paul Reuter—a Mizzou graduate who studied composition under Dr. W. Thomas McKenney—and Jeanne Sinquefield talked about how to get University of Missouri composers to hear their chamber works performed at the historic Sheldon Concert Hall by St. Louis musicians, including SLSO members. Each season, several Mizzou student and faculty composers are commissioned; undergraduates and graduates are both eligible, and the university's composition faculty selects the composers.
