Concert by the East L.A. rock band Los Lobos, with guest performer Emerson MagaƱa, at The Sheldon.
Los Lobos play The Sheldon on Thursday, December 3, as part of the The Sheldon Presents series. They're joined by guest performer Emerson MagaƱa, a classically trained guitarist and vocalist from Colima, Mexico, who now lives here in St. Louis and plays in the local ensemble Gipsy Social.
If you're not familiar with them, Los Lobos are an East L.A. rock band whose founding five members have played together for 52 years: Louie PĆ©rez on drums, guitars, percussion and vocals; Steve Berlin on saxophone, percussion and flute; Cesar Rosas on vocals, guitar and mandolin; Conrad Lozano on bass, guitarron and vocals; and David Hidalgo, who covers vocals, guitar, accordion, percussion, bass, keyboards, melodica, drums, violin and banjo. Across five decades and more than 100 gigs a year, they've released 24 albumsā17 studio and 7 liveāand collected four Grammys out of 12 nominations, a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction in 2018, an NEA National Heritage Fellowship in 2021, and the ALMA Ritchie Valens Pioneer Award.
Their sound grew out of East L.A. barrio culture, folding in norteƱa, rancheras, bolero, cumbias, son huasteco and son jarocho, and songs like "La Bamba" made them worldwide cultural ambassadors. That mix of styles is a good way to get a sense of what they bring to the stage.
