While We Slumber

Kitt is showing While We Slumber at God's House Tower, an exhibition commissioned by 'a space' arts that runs from Saturday 15 August to Monday 12 October 2026. It's free to visit, and the tower is open 10:00am to 4:00pm throughout.

The whole thing starts with a simple question: what do we share when we sleep in close proximity? Kitt takes that and runs with it, drawing on the rituals of sleepovers — midnight feasts, whispered conversations, star-gazing, makeshift forts and sleeping bag stair toboggans — to look at how social sleeping deepens emotional connection and reshapes how we think about care, intimacy and belonging. There's a central idea here called 'emotional heritage', the notion that feelings accumulate within buildings over time.

That's where the venue comes in. At God's House Tower, Kitt traces a history of communal slumber that stretches across centuries: from incarceration in the 1700s and 1800s to more recent events like artist residencies and a 24-hour ukulele jam. It puts the intimate, domestic side of sleeping alongside the tower's more institutional past, and lets the two sit together.

Kitt, who also goes by Lady Kitt, is a disabled sculptor who describes her practice as 'Mess Making As Social Glue'. It's a way of working shaped by a semi-nomadic childhood that included no formal education until she was 14. Her work has been shown internationally at Atlanta Contemporary, Saatchi Gallery and the National Centre on Restorative Justice, and she was a NE Culture Awards Visual Artist of the Year finalist in 2024.
