Amateur production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma! by the Southampton musical theatre society SOS Presents at Mayflower Studios.
SOS Presents are bringing Oklahoma! to Mayflower Studios this July, with performances running from the 8th to the 11th. It's an amateur production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, staged in Studio 1 on Above Bar Street.
If you're not familiar with the story, it's set against the wide-open skies of the American frontier. The plot centres on the rivalry between Curly, a cowboy, and Jud, a farmhand, as they both compete for the attention of the headstrong Laurey. It's a simple setup that's held up for decades, and this production keeps the songs that helped redefine musical theatre: 'Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'', 'The Surrey with the Fringe on Top', and 'People Will Say We're in Love'.
Behind the show is SOS Presents, Southampton's oldest musical society, which is celebrating a hundred years of staging award-winning musical theatre. They've put on Guys and Dolls, Evita, Legally Blonde, and Wind in the Willows, and they often take their performances outdoors to local festivals and events, like the Totton Carnival. This is a full-scale production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein legendary, with music by Richard Rodgers and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It's based on Lynn Riggs's play Green Grow the Lilacs, and it uses the original choreography by Agnes de Mille.
