The classic musical about Hollywood's transition to sound films, featuring high-energy dance and sumptuous set designs, returns to the Mayflower Theatre.
Singin' in the Rain is coming to the Mayflower Theatre from 25 to 29 May 2027, bringing the classic musical to Southampton for a short run. It's the one most people know by name, and this production stars faces from Strictly and Coronation Street.
The story is set in Hollywood during the Roaring Twenties, and it follows the golden couple Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont. Their lives are turned upside down when 'talkies' replace silent films, and an aspiring actress is drafted in to save the day. It's a light, funny look at the chaos that happened when cinema suddenly found its voice.
On the music side, it sticks to the original MGM score, so you'll hear the numbers you expect: 'Good Morning', 'Make 'em Laugh', and the title track itself. The choreography is recreated from the original work of Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, and the whole thing is built around high-energy dance and sumptuous set designs. One of the more impressive details is that there are more than 14,000 litres of water on stage every night, which is where the title comes from.

It's a big, bright production that doesn't shy away from the spectacle. The Mail on Sunday called it 'one of the most marvellous movie musicals of all time', and the Daily Telegraph described it as 'a night of sheer delight'.
