Claire Sweeney, known for Coronation Street, stars as Miss Hannigan in the world's favourite family musical, Annie, at the Mayflower Theatre.
Annie runs for one week at the Mayflower Theatre from 25 to 30 January 2027, with Claire Sweeney taking on the role of Miss Hannigan. It's the family musical most of us know by name, and this production brings it to Commercial Road for a short run.
The story is set in 1930s New York during the Great Depression. It follows a brave young orphan forced to live in the orphanage of the tyrannical Miss Hannigan, until her luck changes: she's chosen to spend Christmas with the billionaire Oliver Warbucks. While she's there, Hannigan hatches a plan to spoil the search for the girl's true family. The musical won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, for its first Broadway production, and its score produced standards like 'It's the Hard-Knock Life', 'Easy Street', 'I Don't Need Anything But You' and 'Tomorrow'. The Mayflower bills it as the world's favourite family musical.
Claire Sweeney, a Coronation Street favourite, takes on Miss Hannigan following a theatre career that includes Chicago, Guys and Dolls, 9 to 5 the Musical, Crazy For You, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Legally Blonde and Hairspray, as well as the title role in Educating Rita alongside Matthew Kelly. She's joined by Alex Bourne as Oliver Warbucks, Tanisha-Mae Brown as Grace Farrell, Christian Cooper as Rooster and Amber Kennedy as Lily St. Regis.
