Roger Fry and the 'Art Quake of 1910' - Art Lecture with Dr David Boyd Haycock

Dr David Boyd Haycock is talking about Roger Fry and the 'Art Quake of 1910' at the Southampton City Art Gallery on Thursday 24 September, from 5pm to 6pm. The lecture is held in the gallery's lecture theatre on Commercial Road, SO14 7LP.

The talk centres on Fry's 1910 exhibition Manet and the Post-Impressionists at the Grafton Galleries in London. It was a show that brought together works by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso and Manet, and it caused a sensation that changed the direction of art in England. Haycock looks at the exhibition itself, the press and public reaction it provoked, and what it did to British art over the next fifty years.

It's not a standalone event, either. The lecture accompanies Art Then!, a new exhibition at the gallery curated by Haycock in collaboration with the Ingram Collection. That show brings together around a hundred paintings, sculptures and drawings to celebrate half a century of Modern British Art, so you can see the work and hear the talk in the same building. Haycock is also the author of A Crisis of Brilliance: Five Young British Artists and the Great War.

Copies of his accompanying catalogue are available to buy for £10, down from the RRP of £15, with the chance to have it signed by the author. Tickets for the lecture are £8, and it's suitable for anyone over 12. The talk runs from 5pm to 6pm on Thursday 24 September at the Southampton City Art Gallery.
