A historical talk by Andy Skinner exploring the origins, building and history of the St Mary's Workhouse in Southampton.
Andy Skinner is taking a look at the story of St Mary's Workhouse on Thursday 3 December, as part of the Weekday Wonderings series at Tudor House & Garden. It's a morning session, running from 11am to 12.30pm, and it's held in the Georgian Room.
Weekday Wonderings is a weekday initiative from Southampton City Council Cultural Services that explores the city's history and heritage, with each session bringing something different to the table: a talk, a tour, or something else entirely. This one falls into the talk category, with historian Andy Skinner drawing back the curtain on Southampton's workhouse, which stood in the St Mary's neighbourhood. He'll be looking at where it came from, the building itself, and the stories of the unfortunate people who were forced to call it home.
If you're not familiar with the history of the place, it's a glimpse into a side of the city that doesn't always get the spotlight. The workhouse was a stark reality for many people in St Mary's, and Skinner's talk is built around the building and the lives that played out inside it. It's a local story, told in a local room, and it fits right into the kind of thing Weekday Wonderings is about.
