Tim's Gallery Tours: The Modern Movement - 1900 - 1960

Tim Craven is leading a guided tour of the Southampton City Art Gallery on Wednesday 9 December, from 11am to 12pm. It's part of his regular series of gallery tours, and this one focuses on the modern movement from 1900 to 1960.

Craven is an artist and the gallery's former curator, so he knows the collection from both sides of the frame. He takes you up close to the fine art on the walls and fills in the gaps — the context behind the work and the lives of the artists who made it. Each tour in the series picks a different era as its theme, and they range from Van Dyck's seventeenth-century portraits through to the explosion of shape and colour of the 1960s and the present day.

The gallery itself has recently reopened after a major upgrade, with refurbished display rooms and a restored, repainted upstairs atrium. This tour sits alongside the exhibition Art Then! British Painting 1910-1960, which celebrates half a century of modern British art and was curated by Dr David Boyd Haycock in collaboration with the Ingram Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art.
