An exhibition celebrating the compact disc, featuring a collection of CDs with distinctive artwork and personal memories, staged by Winchester University colleagues.
Perfect Sound Forever is running at West Downs Gallery in Southampton until 10 October, a love letter to the compact disc. It's put together by two Winchester University colleagues, Glenn Fosbraey, Associate Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Southampton musician Daniel Ash, a visiting lecturer who writes with his band Teenage Waitress and with whom Fosbraey co-teaches the Writing Song Lyrics module. Both are collectors who still own CDs, and they've set out to reignite interest in the format and highlight the personal memories and connections people have with physical media as opposed to digital.
The display ranges from all-time favourites and bargain-bin buys to items with distinctive artwork, like Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, and even a signed disc. There's a bit of a story to the gaps too: the organisers note that Pink Floyd's The Wall left a blank space on the wall after being lent away about twenty years ago. It's a collection that doesn't just show the discs, but the way they're kept and the holes they leave when they go.

Fosbraey and Ash are hoping to repeat the exhibition in other spaces, so this is one of its first stops. You can catch it at the West Downs Gallery, part of Winchester University in Southampton, until 10 October.
