A one-man comedy adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster stories, starring Sam Harrison, brought directly from the West End.
Sam Harrison brings Jeeves Takes Charge to Mayflower Studios from Tuesday 29 September to Saturday 3 October, playing in Studio 1 on Above Bar Street. It's a one-man adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster stories, and Harrison plays all twenty-two characters himself. That includes Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, of course, but also Florence Craye, Gussie Fink-Nottle, Bingo Little, Uncle Willoughby and Aunt Dahlia. The whole thing is set in Wodehouse's absurd world of country houses, terrifying aunts and gentlemanly panic, following the hapless Bertie Wooster as his resourceful valet steers him away from disaster and matrimony at every turn.
It's not a new show. It first opened in London in 1980 at the Fortune Theatre, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cameron Mackintosh, Barbara Dickson and Bernard Theobald. It became an unexpected theatrical phenomenon, and Edward Duke won the Olivier Award for Most Promising Newcomer for the original performance. This version is directed by Hugh Wooldridge and adapted by James Duke, Edward Duke and Hugh Wooldridge, coming direct from the West End. Wodehouse himself is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic writers in the English language, and he wrote more than seventy novels and over three hundred short stories across a career spanning seven decades. The play pulls from that world, with Harrison handling the entire cast on his own.
