A pop-up exhibition by Maja Hill exploring the fragmented memories of Yugoslavia through geography and historical interpretation.
Maja Hill is bringing a pop-up exhibition to God's House Tower this July, titled Changing Identities & Histories - Fragmented memories of Yugoslavia. It runs from Thursday 23 July to Monday 27 July in the Crawford Room, so it's on for a few days rather than just a single afternoon.
It's a journey back to Yugoslavia told through geography and memory. Hill's point is that travelling and visiting museums along the way opens up a view of the rift between how the same historical moments are interpreted. The exhibition brings together collections gathered using different frameworks and different views of the same lands, each fitting a different national agenda. It's less about a single, settled history and more about the gaps and contradictions that emerge when you look at the same place from different sides.

If you're not familiar with the region, it's a good way in. The focus on fragmented memories and competing interpretations means you don't need to be an expert to get what she's after—the whole thing is built around the idea that there isn't just one version of the story. It's a pop-up, so it's only there for the five days, and it's free to visit. You'll find it in the Crawford Room at God's House Tower in Southampton, running from 23 to 27 July.
