Becoming Doctors is open at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton, running from 8 September to 5 December 2026. It's held in the Mezzanine Gallery, and the whole thing is an exhibition of work by medical students exploring identity, inequality, and the future of care.
What you'll find on the walls and in the space is the creative side of aspiring medics. It's not just one thing: there are photographs, zines, poems, podcasts, drawings, animations, and more. Together they offer a look into their lives, their identities, and their hopes for the future, and what it means to truly care. It's a chance to see the people behind the scrubs, talking about the things that usually stay out of the lecture theatre.
The exhibition grew out of a project the curator has been developing for over a year, bringing together medical education, lived experience, creativity, and public engagement. It was funded by the University of Southampton's Public Engagement with Research unit, the Institute for Life Sciences, and the Research England Higher Education Innovation Fund. It was curated by Dr Luca Di Gregorio, Edward Dymond, and Dr Joan Tumblety, in collaboration with Living Well Partnership.

It also forms part of the British Science Festival, which runs from 16 to 20 September 2026, so if you're around the city during those few days, this is one of the things you can work into your schedule. Otherwise, you've got until 5 December to catch it at the John Hansard Gallery.
