Live music session with saxophonist Raymond MacDonald and guitarist Steve Malley, supported by the Sheffield improv quartet Jasnoch and three other musicians.
Raymond MacDonald and Steve Malley play Bishops' House on Friday 23 October, with support from the Sheffield-based improv quartet Jasnoch. The two bring together very different voices: MacDonald's saxophone, noted for its emotional depth, spontaneity and fearless creativity, and Malley's richly textured guitar, which weaves alternative folk, spontaneous improvisation and atmospheric storytelling. The Wire once described MacDonald's playing as 'mid period Albert Ayler hitchhiking in the Scottish highlands, yet melodically unique and utterly wild and free'. They're also known from Horse Loom and Unit Ama.
Opening the night is Jasnoch, a local improv quartet made up of oud, two violas and tuba. The line-up is Jasnoch on oud, Gayle Brogan and Gillian Whiteley on viola, and Derek Shaw on tuba. It's a Sheffield group, so they'll be playing on their own turf before MacDonald and Malley take over.
