Traditional music show with banjo and Scottish fiddle, Holly and the Reivers' Samhain Songs, a seasonal celebration of All Hallows' Eve.
Holly and the Reivers are playing Bishops' House on Friday 30 October, with their new show Samhain Songs taking centre stage. It's a night built around one of the oldest festivals in the calendar, and the timing fits: the gig falls just before Halloween.
Samhain Songs is a brand new show devoted to the songs of Samhain, known worldwide as All Hallows' Eve. It's the time of year when legend says the veil between worlds is thinnest and spirits, ghosts and darker things descend upon the land before winter. The band has spent time in the archives to put it together, pulling out songs both old and new alongside their own compositions, all deeply influenced by the same traditions. They frame the whole thing as a seasonal celebration of one of our oldest festivals.
That tradition is easy to hear in the instruments they bring to it: old-time banjo, Scottish fiddle and the ballad singing tradition. It's a sound that sits in the folk world, and the set mixes those older songs they've dug up with the ones they've written themselves.
