Live show by the Egyptian-Belgian trio The Handover, blending classical Arabic music with shaabi rhythms and psychedelic improvisation, with support from guitarist Nick Jonah Davis.
The Handover play Bishops' House on Saturday 31 October, with support from guitarist Nick Jonah Davis. The trio is Egyptian-Belgian, with Aly Eissa on oud, Ayman Asfour on violin and Jonas Cambien on keyboards. They describe their music as hypnotic and trance-inducing, drawing on the ritual rhythms of the Egyptian countryside and combining the delicacy of classical Arabic music with the raw expressiveness of Egypt's rural and shaabi sounds, plus psychedelic improvisation, kraut-like riffs and experimental textures.
Their self-titled debut came out on the American cult label Sublime Frequencies, where it was hailed as one of the label's best releases and drew strong reviews from Songlines, The Wire, Ley Lines and Magnet Magazine. Since then, they've built a following playing Rewire Festival in The Hague, Counterflows in Glasgow, BRDCST in Brussels, Jazzfest Berlin, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Motvind and Oslo World Festival, as well as clubs across Europe, the UK and Egypt. They were selected for an official WOMEX showcase in 2025, and a second album is scheduled for 2026.
Opening for them is Nick Jonah Davis, a Nottingham guitarist who has spent more than a decade establishing himself as one of Britain's most distinctive solo players. His playing draws on Bert Jansch and Nick Drake, pre-war blues, Indian classical music and free improvisation.
