Night of folk and indie-folk with Monqi, a Sheffield singer-songwriter and storyteller, supported by Lou Gold, at Alder in Neepsend.
Monqi plays Alder in Neepsend on Saturday 14 November, with support from Lou Gold. It's a Sheffield-based bill, with both artists now calling the city home.
Monqi is a folk singer, songwriter and storyteller based here in Sheffield. She describes her music as indie-alternative, and that's a fair way to put it — it sits somewhere between intimate folk and something a bit more expansive. The folk side comes through in the delicate poetry and the close-up vocals, while the alternative side shows up in the rich, textured instrumentals and haunting melodies that build around them. It's the kind of set that works just as well if you're listening closely to the lyrics as if you're letting the arrangements carry you.
Opening the night is Lou Gold, a London-born artist who's also based in Sheffield. Her sound is warm, alt-folk and indie-folk driven by acoustic guitar and poetic storytelling. There's a similar thread running through both acts — the focus on the song and the story, and a folk sensibility that doesn't stay strictly traditional. With Lou Gold on support, the whole evening stays in that acoustic-led, storytelling territory.
