Interactive room-scale VR experience that takes you into the acid house rave scene of 1989, directed by Darren Emerson.
In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats is running at Cole Store — the old John Lewis building in the city centre — from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October. It's a room-scale VR experience that drops you into the acid house rave scene of 1989, inside an illegal all-night warehouse party. Once you're in, you're chased through the people and forces that drove the era: the promoters, the pirate radio, the police and the crowd. The soundtrack features Orbital's Chime and Joey Beltram's Energy Flash, two of the defining tracks of that first wave of rave.
It's directed by Darren Emerson and produced by East City Films. The whole thing is interactive, so you're not just watching a scene play out; you're moving through it. It's more suited to over-18s, though anyone 14 and over can go if they're accompanied by an adult. There are standing and seated versions available, and it's wheelchair accessible.
Two things to keep in mind before you book: there are no toilet facilities on site, so you'll want to sort yourself out before you head in, and the work contains flashing lights and loud music throughout. If you're sensitive to either, it's worth knowing that they're a constant part of the experience rather than just a few moments here and there.
