An immersive screening of the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show with live performances, a fancy-dress competition and special introductions, supporting the LGBTQ+ charity SAYiT.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show returns to Showroom Cinema on Friday 30 October, the venue's annual immersive screening of the cult classic. It's a collaboration with the University of Sheffield Horror Society, and it serves as the boisterous end to Showroom's LGBTQ+ History Month programme, which this year runs under the theme 'Telling Stories – Fantasy and Reality'.
If you've never seen it, the story follows a young couple who, stranded on an isolated stretch of road, find shelter in the lair of the mad transvestite scientist Dr Frank-N-Furter and discover his latest creation, Rocky Horror. The film performed poorly on its initial release but grew into one of the greatest examples of interactive cinema, carried by its wild characters, elaborate dances and memorable songs.
The night is built for participation: immersive elements, live performances, a fancy-dress competition and special introductions that contextualise the representation of trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people on screen. It's the kind of screening where you're encouraged to get involved rather than just sit in the dark, so it's worth thinking about your costume well in advance. Proceeds from the night go to the LGBTQ+ youth charity SAYiT.
