Open-mic storytelling night run by The Story Forge inside Sheffield General Cemetery, where attendees can share a short story or listen in the graveyard.
Hallowearly is back at Sheffield General Cemetery on Tuesday 20 October, the open-mic storytelling night run by The Story Forge. It's an evening of storytelling under the stars, and the setting does a lot of the heavy lifting here: the night is held inside the cemetery, and the organisers describe it as the kind of place where the mood shifts the moment you step through the gates.
The format is open, so you can play it however you like. If you've got a story you've been working on, you can bring it along and share it — up to ten minutes, rehearsed or not. If that feels like too much, you can just sit in the shadows and listen. It's aimed at aspiring performers, spoken-word artists and budding comedians, so it works as a low-stakes way to get something in front of an audience, but it's just as easy to go as a listener.
There are a few practical things to keep in mind before you head over. The meeting point is at the end of Cemetery Avenue, under the cemetery gate archway, and from there you'll walk to the story chair in the Catacomb Woodland. It's rustic territory: bring your own seating, wear strong footwear, and carry a torch. There are no toilets on site and the paths are uneven, so come prepared for a bit of a trek. Refreshments are provided, which is a welcome addition when you're out in the dark.
