Family activity to make 3D relief artwork using found objects and craft materials, inspired by the Gathering Landscapes exhibition.
Weston Park Museum is hosting Textured Landscapes on Tuesday 27 October, a family activity where you make 3D relief artwork using found objects and craft materials. The session takes its lead from Gathering Landscapes: 150 Years of Collecting at Weston Park Museum, the exhibition curated by Heavy Water Collective that's currently on display.
If you've spent any time at Weston Park, you know it's one of the city's old reliables. It opened on Western Bank in 1875 and has been drawing visitors for nearly 150 years, telling the stories of Sheffield and its people from prehistory to the present. The permanent galleries cover a lot of ground: the art gallery Gordon Bridge Gallery focuses on Picturing Sheffield; Beneath Your Feet handles the archaeology; and What On Earth! is the natural science showcase, which recently got a major grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to bring brand-new additions alongside the long-standing favourites — the giant Chatsworth tree, the creatures of Ancient Lands, and the exotic animals and birds of Weird and Wonderful.
Alongside those are Sheffield Stories and Sheffield Life & Times, plus the continuing display Contemporary Connections: South Asian Heritage. The museum also runs a programme of changing exhibitions, with Gathering Landscapes being the one this particular activity is built around. There's the museum café, Ambulo, on site too, if you fancy a break between galleries.
