Free Christmas celebration at Devonshire Green with music, food and drink, replacing the city's traditional Christmas lights switch-on.
Devonshire Green hosts the city's Christmas celebration on Sunday 15 November, from 3pm to 6.30pm. It's the main event of the season, with a Christmas market, music, food, drink and a festive light show. If you've lived here a while, you'll know it takes the place of the traditional Christmas lights switch-on, which organisers cancelled in 2022 after crowd safety fears and renovation work on Fargate and Pinstone Street forced a change of plan. At its height, the annual switch-on drew up to 40,000 people.
This year it's part of what's being billed as Sheffield's biggest Christmas season yet. The festive opening weekend brings an artificial ice rink back to Tudor Square for the first time in more than a decade, a snow slide on Surrey Street and Christmas lights spread across more of the city centre. The wider season also takes in a city-centre Christmas Market of more than 50 log cabins run by local independent traders, a Victorian Christmas Market at Kelham Island Museum set under gas lamps, and Singin' in the Rain staged live on the Crucible. More than 80 per cent of the market traders are expected to be local.
