Live concert by Korean traditional music performer Dasom Baek, playing the daegeum and sogeum, with support from Black Brunswicker.
Dasom Baek plays Bishops' House on Sunday 1 November, with support from Black Brunswicker. Baek is a composer, improviser, lecturer and performer of traditional Korean instruments, and she works across several of them: the daegeum, sogeum, danso and saenghwang. She's a Certified Master of Important Intangible Cultural Asset (no. 45), with a Bachelor's and a Master's from the Korea National University of Arts and a PhD in progress at Seoul National University.
Her career has moved through both competition and performance. She's won the Park Rokju and Nanggye Gugak Contests and took second place at the Dong-A Gugak Competition. She's played as a Kumho Young Artist and with the KBS Gugak Orchestra, and represented Korea at the ASEAN-KOREA International Flute Festival. In 2019 she became an OMI Music fellow in New York and released her debut album; in 2021 she performed at SXSW and the National Gugak Center.
Her 2024 album, Mirror City, layers ambient sounds and chopped vocal patterns over the rasping timbres of the daegeum and sogeum, with the ajeang played by Minseon Choi. The support act, Black Brunswicker, is the ambient-folk project of Etta Helfrich, now based in Manchester.
