A guided walk through the historic Sheffield General Cemetery to discover and learn about the variety of mushrooms and toadstools that thrive there, led by expert Ziggy.
Sheffield General Cemetery is hosting a Cemetery Fungi Walk on Friday 30 October, from 1.00pm to around 2.45pm. It's a guided walk led by Ziggy, an expert who'll take you through the grounds to find the mushrooms and toadstools that pop up across the site this time of year. Along the way, you'll learn about what they are and the role they play in the natural world.
The walk crosses several different areas of the cemetery, so you'll see a fair variety of fungi rather than just one or two spots. It's run by volunteers and works as a fundraiser for the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust, a registered charity, with all the proceeds going toward their work preserving the site. The walk itself lasts between an hour and a half and two hours, so you'll be out for a good stretch of the afternoon.

For a bit of context, the cemetery opened in 1836 and saw its last burial in 1978; these days it's kept as a green space in the heart of the city. The walk is aimed at adults, though it's more suitable for children over 11, and dogs aren't allowed. Tickets are £7.00 for adults and £2.50 for children, and all children have to be accompanied by a ticketed adult. They're sold online via Ticketsource, with none available on the door, so you'll need to book ahead. It starts at The Gatehouse, Cemetery Avenue, Sheffield General Cemetery, S11 8NT.
