Stand-up comedy night featuring Amy Matthews performing her 'Definitions of Toast' tour at the Foundry.
Amy Matthews brings her show Definitions of Toast to Foundry on Saturday 7 November, playing the Raynor Lounge within the Sheffield Students' Union on Western Bank. It's a stand-up night with Matthews as the sole bill, so the whole evening is her hour.
Matthews is an Essex-born, Scotland-based comedian and writer who first made a name for herself when she was named best newcomer at the 2019 Scottish comedy awards. She's been a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe every year since then, with The Life Aquatic in 2019, Moreover, The Moon in 2022, and Commute With The Foxes in 2024. Her special I Feel Like I'm Made of Spider picked up five stars on ITVx, and she's spent plenty of time on the road supporting the likes of Ed Byrne, Josh Widdicombe, Suzi Ruffell, Tom Allen, Sarah Keyworth, Jason Manford, Tom Davis and Jessica Fostekew. Rolling Stone described her as having 'a searing wit' who 'makes the deeply personal feel like a universal truth', while other critics have called her drily funny, giddily quirky and technically flawless.
Beyond the stage, she's a writer for Have I Got News For You and hosts the official English Heritage podcast, and she's appeared on Comedy Central Live, Gifted on BBC, and Dan Does Dating on BBC Radio 4. That mix of writing for panel shows and hosting a podcast sits alongside the live touring, so she's as much a writer as she is a performer.
