Concert featuring LA Diabla as an opening act at the historic Madre Cumbia night, alongside Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, Fruko and Carmelo Torres, and REZA.
LA Diabla plays Quartyard on Wednesday, October 28, as part of a night called Madre Cumbia. The headliners are Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, Fruko, and Carmelo Torres, with LA Diabla and REZA opening. It's a Colombian cumbia night that brings together three names from different eras of the music.
Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto are Latin Grammy winners and one of Colombia's oldest continuously performed musical traditions, keeping alive the ancestral dialogue between gaitas, drums, and voice that predates the commercial recording industry. Fruko has been called a one-man tropical orchestra and the Quincy Jones of Colombia, the producer behind the golden era of Discos Fuentes. Carmelo Torres carries forward the accordion tradition of Colombia's Caribbean plains and plays Francisco el Hombre in Episode 4 of Netflix's One Hundred Years of Solitude. Together, they represent the living roots of Colombian cumbia.
The opening acts bring a local edge to the bill. LA Diabla comes out of the San Diego-Tijuana borderlands, blending Colombian, Mexican, and Chicano influences with garage and punk energy. REZA fuses Afro-Indigenous percussion and tropical brass with cumbia and porro in the style of a New Orleans street band. Between the two of them, the night covers a lot of ground before the headliners even take the stage.
