Free group exhibition of backstrap weaving, wool rugs, needlepoint lace, beading and embroidery by local Indigenous and diasporic artists, curated by Vicky Lowe K'ulub.
Weaving Memories: Textile Art as Cultural Knowledge is on view at Finch Lane Gallery at the Art Barn through October 23, 2026. It's a group show curated by Vicky Lowe K'ulub, a Maya Tseltal artist and educator from Chiapas, Mexico, who's now based here in Salt Lake City. The exhibition brings together local artists whose work centers on backstrap and wool weaving, fine needlepoint lace, beading, embroidery, and natural dyes—the kind of knowledge passed down through generations and across different cultural backgrounds, with Indigenous and diasporic perspectives at the center.
Lowe K'ulub herself has been learning backstrap weaving for the past two years, and her own multidisciplinary work explores family memory, cultural continuity, and community through painting, handcrafted paper, foodways, and weaving. In this show, she puts the process on the same level as the finished pieces, keeping the hands behind the work in view.
The artists included are Alejandra Quechol, Allison MartĂnez Arocho, Calixta Chávez, Deyanira Cerrito Hernández, Elpitha Tsoutsounakis, Fanny Guadalupe Blauer, GerĂłnimo Bazán, Jem, Maria Elena Lowe Gomez K'ulub, Maria Garcia, and Marisela Garcia. Among them are Zapotec weavers Calixta Chávez and GerĂłnimo Bazán, whose rugs draw on designs from Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, and who continue their family legacy of teaching wool weaving to the next generation. Hñahñu artist Deyanira Cerrito Hernández upholds her grandparents' legacy of ixtle and ayate weaving, and Cretan-American designer Elpitha Tsoutsounakis learned filet crochet from an elder aunt in Crete.
