The Band: The Take That Musical

The Band: The Take That Musical runs at the Devonport Playhouse from 15 to 18 July, a short four-day stint in Devonport. It's a jukebox musical built around the music of Take That, one of Britain's most successful boy bands, so the songs you'll recognise are the ones that defined a particular era of pop.

The story starts in 1992 and follows five 16-year-old girls for whom 'the band' is everything. It's a look at that specific kind of teenage obsession — the posters on the walls, the shared records, the way a few songs can become the whole world when you're that age. Fast forward twenty-five years, and the group reunites in Prague to see their heartthrobs one last time and to try again to meet the boy band whose music became the soundtrack to their lives. It's as much about the friendship between the five of them as it is about the music that held them together.

As for the music, it's a good cross-section of the Take That catalogue. You'll hear 'Never Forget', 'Back For Good', 'A Million Love Songs', 'Greatest Day', 'The Flood', 'Flight My Fire', 'Shine' and 'Rule The World'. If you grew up with them, those titles probably bring back a fair few memories; if not, they're the songs that most people associate with the band. They're woven into the story rather than just played as a set list, so the songs follow the girls as they move from their teenage years into adulthood.
