Disney's Beauty and the Beast, a classic Broadway musical with songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, performed at Devonport Playhouse.
Disney's Beauty and the Beast runs at the Devonport Playhouse from Tuesday 1st to Saturday 5th December 2026. It's the stage version of the Academy Award-winning animated feature, and the production is billed as family theatre at its best, with costumes and sets to match.
The story is the one you know: Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If he learns to love and be loved, the curse ends and he's transformed back. It's a simple enough premise, but it's the music that really carries it. The stage show includes all the songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, plus new songs by Menken and Tim Rice, so you get the familiar tunes alongside a bit of extra material.
There's some history behind this version, too. It's Broadway's classic, an international sensation that's been produced in 37 countries. The original Broadway production ran for more than thirteen years and picked up nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. It's a well-trodden show, which is probably why it works so well as a family outing.
