Moulin Rouge! The Musical, winner of 10 Tony awards, brings Baz Luhrmann's film to life on stage in a vibrant musical mash-up extravaganza.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical arrives at Theatre Royal Plymouth on 19 August, running through to 19 September. It's Baz Luhrmann's film brought to the stage, and it's a big production — it picked up ten Tony Awards in 2021, including Best Musical.
The story is set in Paris in 1899 and follows Christian, a lovesick American writer, and Satine, the dazzling star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. Their romance gets in the way of the club's host, Harold Zidler, and the Duke of Monroth, both of whom stand in their way. The whole thing is built around music from over 160 years, from Offenbach to Lady Gaga, with more than 70 iconic songs woven into the show. It's described as a celebration of truth, beauty, freedom and, above all, love — more of a state of mind than just a musical.
Behind the scenes, there's a full creative team. Alex Timbers directed, with a book by John Logan, choreography by Sonya Tayeh and music supervision by Justin Levine. The design is handled by Derek McLane on sets, Catherine Zuber on costumes, Justin Townsend on lighting, Peter Hylenski on sound and Matt Stine as music producer. Luhrmann's original film is remixed here as a musical mash-up, so the songs you recognise are worked into the story rather than just played straight.
