If you haven't been to The Barbary in a while, it's worth knowing what it's become. The space at 951 Frankford Avenue in Fishtown goes back to the mid-to-late 1960s when it was The Colonial, a go-go bar known for girls in sequin bikinis dancing to 'Wipeout' by the Surfaris. After a year of fixing hidden building issues, surviving the pandemic, and closing for three years for a massive structural renovation, it reopened in February 2025 as a proper two-floor dance venue. It's got robust sound and light systems, upgraded restrooms, HVAC, and an outdoor patio. The programming blends party favorites with the driving underground force of house and techno, and it still holds onto its reputation as Fishtown's renegade, indie, pirate bar.
