A concert by London Concertante celebrating the Viennese tradition with orchestral and vocal favourites centred on the music of Johann Strauss II.
London Concertante are at Oxford Town Hall on Saturday 2 January 2027, with a programme built around the music of Johann Strauss II. It's a candlelight concert, and the set is a broad look at the Viennese tradition, starting with the Die Fledermaus Overture and the Tritsch-Tratsch Polka before arriving at The Blue Danube — the waltz that's worked its way from ballrooms into 2001: A Space Odyssey.
From there the evening moves beyond Strauss to other takes on the waltz: Shostakovich's jazz-inflected Waltz No. 2, Sibelius's Valse triste, Tchaikovsky's Waltz from The Sleeping Beauty, and the Nutcracker Suite. It also touches on the golden age of operetta with tenor favourites like Lehár's Dein ist mein ganzes Herz, Wien wird bei Nacht erst schön and Wien, du Stadt meiner Träume, alongside Schubert's Ständchen and Lippen schweigen. Korngold's Serenade from The Snowman adds a bit of nostalgic warmth to the mix.
London Concertante, which they describe as one of the country's leading chamber orchestras, performs the whole programme. It's a long set that covers a lot of ground — the big Strauss waltzes, the operetta songs, and the more melancholic waltzes from Sibelius and Shostakovich — so it's not just one mood for the whole night.
