The chart-topping Welsh Fron Male Voice Choir plays Oxford Town Hall with the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir in a concert titled 'Arches and Spires'.
The Fron Male Voice Choir are coming to Oxford Town Hall on Saturday 31 October, performing alongside the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir. The concert is called Arches and Spires, a title that pulls together the landmarks of both choirs' home regions: Thomas Telford's Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Wales and the Oxford skyline.
Fron started in 1947 in the village of Froncysyllte, near Llangollen, originally formed to compete at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. For decades they remained a local choir, but things shifted in 2006 when music manager Daniel Glatman — who had managed the boy band Blue — heard them at a wedding and secured them a Universal/Decca recording contract. The album that followed, Voices of the Valley, became the fastest-selling classical album of all time, reaching number nine in the main UK album chart and number one in the classical chart. They later released Voices of the Valley – Echoes independently in 2021, which also hit number one.
Since then, they've stepped beyond the recording studio. They appeared with Wrexham AFC in the Disney+ series Welcome to Wrexham and were featured in the Sky Arts documentary Voices of the Valleys. This performance brings them to Oxford to share the stage with the local Welsh choir, with the Arches and Spires title nodding to the connection between the two.
