The Oxford Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Max with pianist Enoch Wong, plays Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No 3 and Bruckner's Symphony No 4 'Romantic'.
The Oxford Symphony Orchestra are playing at Oxford Town Hall on Saturday 14 November, with the music starting at 7:30pm. It's a double bill that pairs two very different sounds: Prokofiev's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No 3 in C, Op 26 and Bruckner's Symphony No 4 in E flat, better known as the 'Romantic'.
The Prokofiev comes first, and it's a lush, fiery concerto that the orchestra describes as full of crackling energy and playfulness. On the piano is Enoch Wong, a young pianist noted for technical brilliance and poetic conviction. The second half is the Bruckner, a symphony said to capture the magnificence of the medieval natural world and the spirit of knights hunting, while also speaking to the nature of human existence. It's a big, expansive work that sits in a different register entirely from the Prokofiev, so the two halves pull the evening in opposite directions.
Behind the podium is Robert Max, who leads the orchestra and also gives conducting masterclasses for under-25s. The Oxford Symphony Orchestra is the city's leading non-professional large symphony orchestra, bringing together committed local players and exceptional soloists. They describe their approach as open and welcoming, which fits the mix of local musicians and guest soloists they work with.
