Screening of the cult classic 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', the longest-running theatrical release of all time, for Halloween.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is back at The Oxford Cinema and Cafe on Saturday 17 October, just in time for Halloween. It's the big-screen version of Richard O'Brien's legendary cross-dressing musical, and it's billed as the cult classic to end all cult classics and the longest-running theatrical release of all time.
If you've never seen it, it's a sci-fi B-movie parody that follows Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick, who find themselves thrust unwittingly into Dr Frank-N-Furter's Annual Transylvanian Convention. From there, it's exactly the kind of thing that earned it a cult following: high camp, a bit of a wink at the audience, and a whole lot of glitter. It's the sort of film that's built a life far beyond the screen, with audiences turning screenings into a participatory rite of their own.
That's part of the draw here, too. While it's a cinema screening, Rocky Horror has a long history of people turning up in costume and shouting back at the screen, so it's less of a quiet night at the movies and more of a shared event. Whether you're going for the first time or you've seen it a dozen times, it's a good way to kick off the Halloween season.
