Screening of Guillermo del Toro's 'Pan's Labyrinth' in its 20th anniversary restoration at the historic Phoenix Picturehouse.
Pan's Labyrinth is back on the big screen at Phoenix Picturehouse in Oxford, running from Tuesday 27 October to Monday 14 December. This is the 20th anniversary restoration of Guillermo del Toro's 2006 film, so it's a good chance to catch it in a cinema if you've only ever seen it on a small screen.
Set in post-civil war Spain, the story follows ten-year-old Ofelia, who moves with her pregnant mother to live under the thumb of her cruel stepfather. While there, she's drawn into a mysterious labyrinth where she meets a faun who tells her she may be a lost princess from an underground kingdom. To return to her true father, she has to complete a series of surreal and perilous tasks that blur the line between reality and fantasy. It's a dark, imaginative piece of storytelling that sits somewhere between a fairy tale and a war drama.
Del Toro directed and wrote it, and the cast includes Sergi Lopez, Maribel Verdú, Doug Jones, Ivana Baquero, Ariadna Gil and Álex Angulo. The Oxford screening runs for 119 minutes and carries a 15 certificate, so it's not one for the younger ones. The restoration marks the film's twentieth anniversary, and since it's running for several weeks, you've got plenty of dates to choose from across the autumn and into December.
