Screening of Andrzej Żuławski's 1981 cult horror 'Possession', with Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill, at Oxford's independent cinema UPP.
The Ultimate Picture Palace is screening Possession on Wednesday 28 October, part of their 'Her-steria Horror Classics' season. It's a 1981 psychological horror directed by Andrzej Żuławski, with Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill in the lead roles. The story starts with a husband who suspects his wife is having an affair, but the truth turns out to be far stranger than a simple betrayal.
Shot in France and Germany, Possession was banned on its first UK release, and it's since become a cult classic. Much of that reputation rests on Adjani's unhinged performance, which won her the best actress award at Cannes. It's a surreal, hypnotic film that earns its place in a horror season, and seeing it on the big screen is the way it was meant to be watched.
The screening is part of 'Her-steria Horror Classics', a season at UPP that looks at horror through a female lens. The cinema itself is Oxford's oldest independent, founded in 1911 and community-owned since 2022. It's a single-screen auditorium on the Cowley Road in East Oxford, known for showing independent, international and classic films.
