Rehearsed reading of Shola Asante's new play 'The Other Half', curated by John Retallack, at The Old Fire Station.
Shola Asante brings a new play to the Old Fire Station on Thursday 19 November, as part of Oxford Platforms, the venue's new-writing night. It's a rehearsed reading of The Other Half, curated by John Retallack, so you'll be hearing the script on its feet rather than a fully staged production. The reading starts at 16:00, which makes it a late-afternoon one rather than an evening out.
Asante is the main feature of the night, and The Other Half is the new work being read. The Oxford Platforms series is built around this kind of thing — new writing getting its first proper hearing in front of an audience, with the focus on the text and the performance rather than the set and costumes. Retallack's curation brings it together, and Asante's play is the one taking centre stage this time.
The Old Fire Station is a multi-form arts centre in the heart of Oxford, and it shares its building with the homelessness charity Crisis. The two work together to tackle homelessness in the city by offering training and volunteering opportunities to Crisis clients, who then create and show work alongside professional artists in gallery exhibitions and ongoing theatre projects. It's a public space that presents new work across different art forms and supports local early-to-mid-career artists in making and showing their work. The venue opens at 9.00am every weekday.
