Screening of the Metropolitan Opera's live HD broadcast of Verdi's 'Macbeth' at Curzon Oxford.
Curzon Oxford is screening Verdi's Macbeth live in HD on Saturday 17 October, as part of the Met Opera's 2026-27 season. It's a cinema broadcast of a live performance from New York, so you get the full opera on the big screen without having to fly across the Atlantic. The screening runs from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., which is a fair bit shorter than a full night at the opera house, so it's an easy one to fit in on a Saturday evening.
On stage, the title role is taken by baritone Quinn Kelsey, with Lise Davidsen as Lady Macbeth. Verdi's Macbeth is a dark, heavy piece of theatre, and having those two lead the cast gives it some real weight. The story is the one you know — ambition, betrayal, and the slow unraveling of a couple who've climbed too high — but hearing it sung in Verdi's sweeping, dramatic style is a different experience from reading it on the page.
Because it's a live HD broadcast, you'll see close-ups of the singers that you'd never get from the stalls of a proper opera house, and the sound is mixed for the cinema, so the orchestra and the voices come through clearly. It's a good way to see a production from the Met if you're not usually one for the opera, as it's a bit more like watching a film than sitting through a four-hour night out.
