Live show by the Scottish band Peatbog Faeries, who blend traditional jigs and reels with dance music, jazz and African influences, at Anarchy Brew Co.
Peatbog Faeries are playing Anarchy Brew Co on Friday 23 October, their sound travelling all the way from the Isle of Skye to Heaton. They're a Scottish outfit that blends traditional jigs and reels with dance-floor grooves, pulling in dance music, jazz and African influences. The melodies are carried by fiddles, pipes and whistles alongside guitars and keyboards, and they bring their own sound and lighting engineers with them, which is why they've become regulars on the UK festival circuit and at venues across the country.
The Scotsman described their music as high-octane, with powerful melodies and a smart degree of techno attitude. That's a fair summary of what they do: they take the traditional Scottish folk they grew up with and run it through a dance-music filter, so you get the pipes and fiddles you'd expect from a Skye band but with a beat that works as well on a dance floor as it does in a pub. It's folk music that doesn't sit still.
The venue is the Heaton-based Anarchy Brew Co, which produces some of the region's best-loved ales, like Wor Beer and Shearer's 260, and is known for booking alternative live bands from around the world. It's a brewery that doubles as a live space, so you can get a pint of their own beer before the music starts.
