The Olive Tree Market is back at Civic Park on Saturday 5 September, from 9am to 2pm. It's one of the city's regular fixtures, running on the first Saturday of each month except January, with extra dates in November and December for the Christmas Markets.
It's built a reputation as one of Australia's most successful contemporary handmade art and design markets, and the focus is pretty clear: Australian-made and ethically produced goods. The organisers curate a collective of emerging and established creatives, so it's more about supporting makers than just browsing. Each edition brings together over 130 artists, designers, makers, gourmet artisan food producers and street food purveyors, with the goods consciously created by the local artistic community. There are also workshops on the programme, so you can do more than just buy.
It's described as a meeting place with a festival atmosphere rather than just a market. Families and friends eat street food while live local music plays, and artists work alongside their contemporaries and the wider public. It's an outdoor, family-friendly and pet-friendly event, with dogs welcome and most stallholders accepting EFTPOS as well as cash.
