A vibrant community market featuring over 130 local artists, designers, makers, gourmet artisan food producers and street food purveyors in a festival atmosphere.
The Olive Tree Market returns to Civic Park on Saturday 5 September, from 9am to 2pm. It's one of the city's longest-running regulars, having run since 2008, and it's back for a stretch of six dates through the end of the year: 5 September, 3 October, 7 November, 21 November, 5 December and 19 December, all from 9am to 2pm.
It started as a place for Newcastle's contemporary artists and designers to show handmade, maker and ethically created goods, with a strong focus on community and reconciliation. Since then it's supported more than 800 artists, designers, makers and small businesses across more than 115 market days, and it's grown into one of the city's most popular events, drawing locals and tourists alike. The organisers describe it as more than a market — a vibrant meeting place with a festival atmosphere, where you can feast on street food and hear live local music, and where artists can chat with their contemporaries and the public, sell their work without large overheads and come together as a community.
Each month brings a curated line-up of over 130 emerging and established artists, designers, makers, gourmet artisan food producers and street food purveyors. You're encouraged to meet the makers and take home goods consciously created by the local artistic community. It's as much about the people behind the stalls as the things they're selling, so it's the kind of morning where you can actually find out who made what you're buying.
