Escucha! A Spanish Sound Adventure comes to Newcastle City Library on Tuesday 29 September, from 10:30 to 11:30am. It's part of the library's school holiday programme, and it's aimed at children aged 5 to 8.
The session is built around sound and how we make it. The first part of the hour is about listening: the kids get to discover the different sounds they can make with everyday objects, the kind of things you'd find around the house. From there, it moves into Spanish, with simple words introduced through music and play rather than a formal lesson. It's a low-pressure way for them to pick up a few phrases while they're busy making noise.
Then comes the making part. Every child builds their own instrument from recycled materials, which they get to take home. It's a good way to see how something that would've gone in the bin can become something you can actually play. To keep the momentum going after the session, there's a sound-hunt activity handed out, so the exploring continues on the journey home.
