A school holiday workshop for children aged 5-12 to create their own stop motion film inspired by Angela Tiatia's work, with gallery entry included.
Newcastle Art Gallery is running a stop motion animation workshop for kids this school holiday, called Clam, Camera, Action!. It runs from 29 September to 2 October, with two sessions a day: 10.00am to 12.00pm and 1.00pm to 3.00pm, held in the gallery's Learning Studio.
The whole thing is built around the work of contemporary artist Angela Tiatia, specifically her video piece The Pearl. The workshop is part of the gallery's current exhibition, Angela Tiatia: Muse, so there's a direct link between what the kids see on the walls and what they'll be making. The prompt is the ocean, and from there they're encouraged to build their own short stop motion film. It's a great way to get them thinking about how to tell a story frame by frame, and the gallery's art educators are there to guide them through the process.
It's aimed at primary school kids, ages 5 to 12. A few practical things to keep in mind: children have to be signed in by an accompanying adult, and that adult needs to stay onsite for the duration of the session. The cost is A$35 per child, which covers entry to the exhibition, access to the stop motion technology, and all the artmaking materials they'll need. Once the animation is finished, the gallery sends the final film to the parent via Dropbox or AirDrop, so you'll have something to keep and show off after it's done.
