Hands-on making workshops for children to create shifting landscapes inspired by tides and drift, part of the Cavitation project by Izabela Pluta.
The Lock-Up is hosting a pair of hands-on making workshops for kids on Saturday 26 September and Saturday 3 October, both running from 10:30am to 12:30pm. The sessions are free, and they're part of Cavitation, a monumental solo project by Newcastle-based contemporary artist Izabela Pluta.
In these workshops, children get to create their own shifting landscapes, taking their cue from the tides and drift that run through Pluta's work. It's a chance to get stuck into the making process rather than just looking at the finished thing, and since it's a two-session run, you can drop in on either date. Both run for two hours on the Saturday morning, so they're easy to fit around a weekend.
Cavitation is a major international co-commission with TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Poland, with New Annual Festival as a key partner. The workshops sit inside a much wider programme at The Lock-Up that runs from 25 September 2026 through to 31 January 2027. Over those months, the venue will host an opening night and artist talk, a live-painted mural, immersive installations, spoken-word poetry responses, spotlight talks, and a guided breathwork and meditation session called 'Morning Drift'.

These workshops are the part of the project that invites visitors to get involved in the making themselves, rather than just following the exhibition around. They run 10:30am to 12:30pm on Saturday 26 September and Saturday 3 October at The Lock-Up in Newcastle, and they're free.
