Open Mic Comedy

Open Mic Comedy is on at the Newcastle Comedy Club on Tuesday 29 September, part of the club's weekly run. It's a night for emerging talent to get on stage and test out new material in front of a live audience, so you'll hear a mix of comics at different stages of their development — some just starting out, others working through a set they've been refining.

The club itself is Newcastle's first dedicated comedy venue, built for locals and visitors alike. It's more than just this weekly open mic, though; on the weekends they put on pro showcases, and they bring in touring acts performing solo shows from interstate and abroad. They also run improv courses and hire out the venue, so it's a proper home for comedy in the city rather than just a room that hosts a gig now and then.

If you're thinking of getting involved yourself, the open mic is the place to start. Performers sign up through the club's own form, so it's a straightforward way to get a few minutes on stage and see how your jokes land. If you're just coming to watch, you'll get a first look at the city's newer comics before they move on to the bigger bills.

Doors open at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start, and entry is free. The night is strictly 18+, so keep that in mind if you're bringing a group. You'll find the Newcastle Comedy Club at 139 Maitland Rd, Islington.
