Stand-up comedy show by Pete Helliar about a media firestorm after a joke on The Project.
Pete Helliar brings his latest show, An International Kerfuffle, to the Newcastle Comedy Club on Friday 6 November. It's a stand-up set built around a real-life media storm: Helliar found himself at the centre of an international incident after a throwaway line on The Project went global during a live interview with Tim Cahill, just before a World Cup qualifier against Honduras. The show follows that fallout, and the kerfuffle that gave it its name.
It's a story that started with a single line and ended up as a full-length show. Helliar takes that one moment and works it out on stage, tracing how a throwaway comment can spiral into something far bigger than it ever was intended to be. The whole thing is directed by Zoë Coombs Marr, and it's already picked up some recognition along the way: it was named a 2026 Perth Fringe World Weekly Award Winner, and critics have called it sharp, self-aware and unapologetically bold.
If you've seen Helliar before, you know he's at his best when he's working through something that actually happened, and this is exactly that. It's not a set of disconnected jokes, but a single story pulled from his own life, told with the kind of self-deprecating edge that makes it work. The whole thing is built on that one interview, and the show is as much about the fallout as it is about the line that started it all.
