The Newkulele Festival returns to the Carrington Bowl on Saturday 21 August, marking the seventh time the event has come to Newcastle. It's a community music day, and the name gives away the main feature: the ukulele. But that's only one part of what's on the bill. The festival brings together ukulele, marimba, brass and percussion, so you'll hear a fair bit more than just strumming throughout the day.
Having reached its seventh edition, the festival has a bit of a track record behind it. The mix of instruments is the thing to hold onto here — the ukulele sits alongside the marimba, the brass section and the percussion, so the sound shifts across the day rather than sticking to one thing. It's a community music event, which means it's as much about the people playing as it is about the music they make.
